Cancer Cure or Quackery? The power of propaganda

We've been a bit lazy at at www.subliminalpersuasion.co.uk with regards to our newsletter, in fact we've been really, really lazy and now we're going to change that.

With the advent of the so called credit crunch there is a whole load of manipulation of the publics perception going on, with different theories, spin, and downright lies being promoted as facts and truths, and this gives us a great opportunity to talk about and expand upon some of the topics that we find fascinating.

Basically this is the hugely underestimated role of propaganda (or as it's politley termed these days "spin"), and the blatantly obvious way that the public psyche is all too easily swayed by it.

But this time we're not just going to talk about it, we're going to make some predictions for the future in true Derren Brown mind reader mode, since we believe that we can see through the manipulation and can accurately predict exactly whats going to happen over the next few months.

In fact we already made one prediction on You Tube in July that hit the nail pretty much on the head with regards to what was going to happen to the stock market, so watch this space.

In the meantime I came across an interesting article the other day that has been produced in a few medical journals, but hasn't recieved any mention in the mainstream press - surprising since it involves a Cure for Cancer....

Now this in itself isn't too surprising since there have been a lot of claims made over the years which have turned out to be false, and this may well be no exception to the rule, but it does have it's basis in medicine, and it looks as though it makes perfect sense.

The thing that really makes it stand out though is that The American Cancer Society have apparently come out & basically recommended that cancer sufferers do not use this firm or pay any attention to their claims - which seems odd for an organisation that is supposed to be involved with finding a cure for cancer - you'd think they'd at least investigate it thoroughly first?

Anyway, if you read the newsletter no 1 you'll have seen that I recommended reading the work of Bernays, the master of propaganda, and it's one of his techniques that came to mind when I heard about the American Cancer Societies attitude.

Basically Bernays recommended the creation of "expert groups" with big, grand titles, that would be structured officially as independent bodies, unconnected to big business and therefore, in the mind of the public, unbiased in their reporting of and conducting of tests, medicines, government policy, etc, etc, etc

Of course unofficially the truth of the matter is that they were actually funded by huge corporations with vested interests in public opinion leaning one way or another, and the recommendations and findings made by these organisations would favour the interests of the corporations, whilst pretending to be acting in the interests of the public.

So the public hear the name of "The Independent Research Institute of x,y,z" and automatically assume that because it has a grand title, and because it is being reported in the press, that they are a bona fide expert group, and that since they have "independent" in their title, or they are a charity, and they're not a business involved in whatever they are experts in, that their findings can be trusted.

However, lets go back to the American Cancer Society and the point that started off this post. When I heard the story I thought to myself, I wonder if they just might count as their benefactors & partners some of the big pharaceutical companies who might well be involved in supplying the market with the currently not very successful and rather expensive cancer drugs.......

......and what do you think that I found?

If you go to this page then you can see which corporations are "committed to the cause." These include AstraZenica, Novartis, Pfizer, and Sanofi-Aventis, among others - I'm sure I don't have to tell you what they do.

Now I'm not claiming that this is an example of a Bernays propaganda machine, but surely it raises the question of conflict of interests at least - especially if the board of trustees contains people who are involved in these markets - which it apparently does.

There was another interesting piece written about the ACS a while back here, talking about how the ACS was a massive corporation type organisation in its own right, and about how it seemed more interested in raising money and paying big salaries than actually curing cancer, so it does make you wonder, doesn't it?

An interesting fact about the ACS is that since that article was written they now spend 147 million Dollars in the last fiscal year on cancer research, which is a fairly large amount of money, isn't it? It does make you wonder why they are sitting on a current pile of assets worth 2.3 BILLION Dollars though! 147 million works out as a lowly 6.4% of their asset value spent on researching cancer - not a lot when you think about it, especially for an organisation that gives the impression that this is its primary goal.

Anyway, I'm not claiming that the ACS are doing anything untoward, nor that they are not doing sterling work in curing cancer - although I think they could try just a little bit harder ;)

No, the point is that the next time that you hear about the findings of some expert economics foundation, or some health or environmental charity, or some independent think tank, do some thorough thinking for yourself - go and look at who is behind the organisation, who is contribution to it, and ask yourself if they would really be funding an organisation to conduct research that might well put them out of business. Then think about the report that you've just heard and whether it might just be trying to sway your opinion in a certain direction.

Christmas is Coming!

Just to finish off I wanted to shamelessly plug the fantastic books to the right to you, but since I don't have a publicly recognised Institute or Foundation to issue a report I'll just do it here instead.

In all seriousness though, you're going to spend a couple of weeks eating cold turkey sandwiches and watching endless repeats of not very good films while your brain turns to a jelly, not unlike the one in your Christmas trifle, so why not spend the time constructively by learning something new.

I'm afraid that 2009 is going to be remembered for all of the wrong reasons, with lots of unemployment, continuing economic woes, and houseprices crashing through the floor, so it might be a good time to think about how you can earn an extra few pennies on the side, just to help make ends meet.

One area that springs to mind is hypnosis, think of all of those people wanting to shed a few pounds after the Christmas pudding has settled, the New Years resolutions to really, definitely give up smoking this time, and about how much money you could earn if you just hone those hypnosis skills a little.

Hypnosis really isn't difficult, it's all a matter of having confidence in yourself first, and once you've cracked that you're away - and hypnotists aren't cheap you know!

The hypnosis course below is very good, and of course there's always our very own Mind Control, NLP & Hypnosis ebook if you want to try that instead.

In either case, have a good Christmas and a propserous New Year.
